Assam Flood; Situation Deteriorates As 8 More Dead Among 23 Lakh Affected

Assam flood situation improved slightly overall, but it was still quite serious as eight more people lost their lives in six districts on Sunday. Notably, the flood affected over 23 lakh people in 28 of the state’s 35 districts, according to officials.

Officials from the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) stated that as of Friday, approximately 24.20 lakh people in 30 districts were affected.

According to ASDMA officials, one person died in each of the districts of Goalpara, Cachar, Dhemaji, Sivasagar, and Dhubri, and two individuals drowned in each of the districts of Nalbari and Dhubri.

Since the monsoon started early last month, numerous people have died as a result of landslides and other disasters in various regions. The total number of dead has risen to 66 with deaths recorded on Sunday.

According to ASDMA officials, the flood submerged over 68,432 hectares of crop land in 3,446 villages spread over 28 districts under flood waters. The monsoon has severely affected over 15.63 lakh domestic animals.

The worst-hit districts among the 28 flood-affected districts include Dhubri, Morigaon, Cachar, Darrang, Dibrugarh, and Barpeta.

In numerous places, the Burhidihing, Dikhou, Disang, Dhansiri, Kopili, Beki, Sankosh, and Kushiyara rivers are approaching the danger level, while the Brahmaputra flows above the danger level at Neamatighat, Tezpur, and Dhubri.

ASDMA officials added that 361 more relief distribution centers are operating in various districts, and that district administrations have established 630 relief camps to house over 53,689 persons.

Assam flood; CM poised to find permanent solution

On Sunday, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who frequently assesses the state’s flood status, paid a visit to the Kamrup area and spoke with local officials and those impacted by the flooding. Subsequently, Sarma informed the media that, in contrast to those who merely wish to label the Assam flood as a national issue, the administration is focusing on finding a national solution.
