Appeal Filed By Irfan Solanki & Brother Against Arson Conviction; Government Seeks Dismissal

In a notable legal twist, former Samajwadi Party (SP) MLA Irfan Solanki and his sibling Rizwan Solanki have challenged their seven-year prison sentence, stemming from a case involving the arson of a woman’s residence.

Their appeal has prompted the state government to file an affidavit advocating for the dismissal of their motion.

Justice Rajeev Mishra oversees the appeal, arguing that the Solanki brothers, who are already serving a seven-year term, face additional criminal charges.

Government attorneys have argued against an expedited hearing for Irfan Solanki’s bail petition, seeking more time to respond.

The petitioners are not only contesting the sentence issued by the Special Court in Kanpur Nagar but are also requesting a stay on their prison term and bail pending the appeal’s outcome.

If the appeal succeeds and they stay the sentence, Irfan Solanki could potentially return to his former legislative position.

The Special MP-MLA Court in Kanpur sentenced Irfan Solanki and four others to seven years in prison and a fine on 7 June this year.

The conviction however relates to the arson of the home of Fatima, a resident of Defence Colony in Jajmau. Irfan Solanki, who represented the Sisamau constituency on an SP ticket, is currently serving at Maharajganj Jail.
