Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended greetings to the people of Assam on Lachit Diwas and paid tribute to Ahom general Lachit Borphukan, celebrated for his pivotal role in defending Assam against the Mughal invasion during the 1671 Battle of Saraighat.

The day, observed on 24 November, commemorates Borphukan’s birth anniversary and honours his unmatched courage, military strategy, and deep commitment to protecting his homeland.

In a message on X, PM Modi wrote, “On Lachit Diwas, we remember Lachit Borphukan, a symbol of courage, patriotism and true leadership. His heroism continues to inspire generations. He played a key role in safeguarding the exemplary culture of Assam.”

A Timeless Legacy

The Prime Minister also shared a video message praising Lachit Borphukan’s ‘fearlessness’, highlighting Assam’s unbreakable spirit shaped by its historical heroes.

He said that the bravery of Borphukan represents the soul of Assam and continues to guide India’s collective resolve.

PM Modi added, “Courage like Lachit Borphukan, fearlessness like his, this is the identity of Assam. I salute the great land of Assam, which gave Mother India a man like Lachit Borphukan. Great personalities like him are our constant inspiration to fulfil the resolve of this immortal era.”

Calling Borphukan a beacon for future generations, he emphasised that the general proved how extremism and tyranny ultimately fade, while India’s eternal light remains immortal.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also paid homage on the occasion.

In a post on X, he described Lachit Borphukan as ‘a symbol of courage and the immortal identity of Assam’s pride’.

He noted that the state government is actively preserving and promoting Borphukan’s legacy through the establishment of a police academy, a memorial, school curriculum additions, and a world-class training institute named in his honour.

CM Sarma added, “His legacy of valour continues to inspire our generations even today. On Lachit Day, we pay homage to the brave warrior who did not let the nation bow down.”

Moreover, Lachit Diwas stands as a reminder of the Ahom general’s devotion to his land and his extraordinary military leadership.

Through tributes from national and state leaders, his legacy continues to resonate, inspiring a renewed appreciation for India’s rich cultural and historical heritage.
