Union Home Minister Amit Shah arrived in Srinagar on Tuesday to conduct a high-level security review meeting after the terror attack.
His visit comes in the wake of a terrorist attack on tourists in the Pahalgam area of Anantnag district, which shocked the nation.
Shah’s meeting is aimed at evaluating the current security situation in the region and determining the next steps to ensure public safety.
The attack occurred earlier on Tuesday, targeting tourists in Pahalgam, a popular tourist destination in Jammu and Kashmir.
The incident has led to widespread shock and condemnation from political leaders and citizens alike. Jammu and Kashmir Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) General Secretary Ashok Koul expressed his outrage over the attack, stating, “This is a very unfortunate incident. After 2019, such incidents stopped, but they have started again. This is a very sad incident. We condemn this and we warn the neighbouring nation that is behind this incident.”
Northern Army Lieutenant General MV Suchindra Kumar is reportedly travelling from Udhampur to Srinagar.
He will meet with local commanders to receive a briefing on the current security situation.
This reflects the urgency with which the Indian Army is responding to the attack and the heightened focus on security in the region.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also departed for Pahalgam on Tuesday to assess the situation on the ground.
His visit underscores the gravity of the incident and the government’s commitment to understanding the full scope of the attack.
President Droupadi Murmu expressed her ‘heartfelt’ condolences to the families of those who lost their loved ones in the attack.
In a statement on social media, the Rashtrapati Bhavan condemned the act, calling it ‘shocking and painful’.
The post described the attack as a ‘dastardly and inhuman act’, emphasising the unjustifiable nature of targeting innocent tourists.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also strongly condemned the attack. In his statement, PM Modi expressed condolences for the victims’ families and vowed to bring those responsible to justice.
He assured the public that all necessary assistance was being provided to those affected, saying, “I strongly condemn the terror attack in Pahalgam. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. I pray that the injured recover as soon as possible. Those behind this heinous act will be brought to justice.”
