Union Home Minister Amit Shah extended congratulations after the Assam Legislative Assembly approved the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill, 2026.

The legislation seeks to establish a single set of civil laws for residents on issues such as marriage, divorce, succession, inheritance and live-in relationships.

Assam has become the first North-Eastern state to pass legislation related to the Uniform Civil Code. It is also the third state in the country to do so after Uttarakhand and Gujarat.

The BJP government led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma succeeded in passing the Bill despite strong protests from Opposition parties, which demanded that the legislation be referred to a Select Committee.

The Assembly introduced the Bill earlier this week before approving it on Wednesday.

HM Amit Shah congratulated Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the Assam government. He also praised the legislators who backed the Bill in the Assembly.

In a post on X, the Union Home Minister stated that the BJP had remained committed to the Uniform Civil Code since the party’s formation. He also said BJP-led governments under Prime Minister Narendra Modi were working to implement equal legal provisions for every citizen.

The proposed law aims to create a common legal structure for all citizens. It will cover matters related to marriage, inheritance, succession and live-in relationships.

The legislation also proposes a ban on polygamy and bigamy. It further makes the registration of live-in relationships mandatory across the state.

The Uniform Civil Code formed a major part of the BJP’s promises ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly elections.

Earlier this month, the Assam Cabinet approved the draft version of the legislation during its first meeting.

HM Amit Shah also reiterated that the Modi government remains focused on ensuring equality before the law throughout the country.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma described the passage of the Bill as a landmark moment for Assam. He thanked members of the Assembly for supporting the legislation and confirmed that authorities would next send the Bill to the Governor of Assam before forwarding it to the President of India for final assent.
