Doctors from AIIMS-Delhi, the country’s leading medical institution, are likely to protest in Delhi on Saturday, demanding justice for a tragic incident that took place at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in West Bengal.
The protest at Jantar Mantar responds to the recent rape and murder of a medical professional at a Kolkata-based hospital.
Seeking Justice, Ensuring Safety: FAIMA VP Urges Central Government To Protect Healthcare Workers
Dr. Suvrankar Datta, Vice President of the Federation of All India Medical Associations (FAIMA) and a senior resident at AIIMS-Delhi, emphasized the importance of this peaceful demonstration.
“Our goal is to seek justice for our colleague from RG Kar Medical College and highlight the urgent need for protection of healthcare professionals across the nation,” Dr. Datta stated.
The medical community has been increasingly concerned about the rise in physical and sexual assaults on healthcare workers, particularly women, while on duty.
In light of these incidents, the doctors are calling on the Union government to enact a nationwide protection law specifically designed to safeguard healthcare professionals from violence.
“We urge the Central Government to establish a comprehensive protection Act to ensure the safety of medical professionals,” Dr. Datta added, stressing the need for immediate action.
The protest, scheduled from 3 PM to 5 PM, is likely to draw significant participation from the medical fraternity.
Dr. Datta has further appealed to doctors nationwide to join the demonstration and show solidarity in their demand for enhanced security measures in hospitals.
In the aftermath of the horrific incident in Kolkata, there have been widespread protests and strikes by doctors across India, severely impacting medical services.
Although the strikes were temporarily halted following a Supreme Court directive on 22 August, where the court urged doctors to resume their duties while assuring no adverse action against them, the demand for justice remains strong.
