In a bold move, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Sanjay Singh on Monday filed a Suspension of Business notice under Rule 267 in the Rajya Sabha, urging an urgent discussion on the escalating crime rates in Delhi.
Highlighting alarming statistics, Singh called attention to the national capital’s deteriorating law and order situation. “Delhi, home to the Prime Minister, diplomats, and Members of Parliament, is now being dubbed the ‘capital of crime’,” Singh stated in his motion.
He pointed to a sharp increase in robberies, attempted murders, and crimes against women and the elderly, citing statistics from leading newspapers. “Robbery cases have risen by 23%, thefts by 25.2%, and attempted murders by 18%. Meanwhile, Delhi continues to top the list of crimes against women among metro cities, exposing glaring flaws in the system,” Singh emphasized.
The AAP MP also flagged other worrying trends, such as gang wars, illegal extortion of traders, and 878 fatal road accidents in the past year. He further criticized the law enforcement response, noting that of the 1,74,253 crimes registered by Delhi Police in 2024, the resolution rates for house thefts and other crimes remain abysmally low.

Adding to the growing concerns, Singh further referenced recent bomb threats in prominent locations, including the Parliament and AIIMS. “These threats highlight a complete failure of the security system, emboldening criminals who now act without fear,” Singh said.
Singh’s notice comes shortly after AAP MPs, including Raghav Chadha and Sandeep Pathak, staged a protest in Parliament on November 29. The leaders accused the BJP-led central government of failing to ensure safety in the capital.
Their protests followed a blast in Delhi’s Prashant Vihar on November 28, which prompted a high alert. Emergency teams, including the National Security Guard (NSG) and Delhi Police Special Cell, rushed to the scene.
Adding fuel to the debate, Delhi Chief Minister Atishi further launched a scathing critique of the BJP-led administration. Drawing comparisons to Mumbai in the 1990s, Atishi said, “Delhi today feels like underworld-dominated Mumbai from TV shows and films of the past. This is unacceptable.”
With crime statistics rising further and public safety in jeopardy, Sanjay Singh’s demand for parliamentary discussion signals AAP’s determination to address the escalating concerns over law and order in Delhi.
