Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged all political parties to support the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam on Saturday.
Speaking from the Red Fort on India’s 80th Independence Day, PM Modi called for stronger political representation for women.
PM Modi highlighted the growing role of women in grassroots governance. He said women leaders in Panchayats, Municipalities and Municipal Corporations have shown strong leadership. They have tackled local challenges effectively.
The Prime Minister recalled Parliament’s passage of the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam. He said political disagreements had delayed the long-standing goal for decades.
Prime Minister Modi appealed to parties to rise above political differences. He urged them to ensure women receive their due representation in State Legislative Assemblies and the Lok Sabha. He said greater participation would allow women to play a larger role in shaping national policies.
The Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026 seeks to operationalise and accelerate the 33 per cent reservation for women under the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam.
Parliament enacted the original legislation as the 106th Amendment Act, 2023.
The proposed measure aims to advance its implementation ahead of the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.
The enabling Bill faces constitutional and political hurdles. Parliament requires a two-thirds special majority to pass it.
The proposal has sparked debate over delimitation and population-based changes to parliamentary seats.
Opposition parties and regional groups have raised concerns about federal balance and representation among states.
The political debate focuses on the timing and implementation of women’s reservation.
Parties differ over how delimitation could alter seat distribution and regional representation.
