Nearly 43% of Indian two-wheeler buyers are actively considering electric vehicles (EVs), up from 30% in 2024, according to a Boston Consulting Group (BCG) report released on Monday.
The report said around 1.8 lakh Indians buy their first electric two-wheeler every month. Electric two-wheelers accounted for 9.9% of total two-wheeler sales between April and August 2026, compared with 5.5% in FY24.
Electric scooter penetration rose to 24.1% from 16.8% over the same period. Sales of electric scooters grew at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 54% between FY22 and FY26, more than three times the growth rate of petrol scooters.
Consumer resistance to electric two-wheelers is declining. The share of buyers who outright reject them fell to 29% from 38% in 2024.
The proportion of electric two-wheeler enthusiasts grew 1.5 times over two years, while detractors remained at around 20%.
BCG Managing Director and Partner Saurabh Chhajer said brands must understand Indian riding conditions and build trust through reliable service, battery assurance, insurance and resale support.
The report found that 59% of short-distance commuters considered electric two-wheelers aesthetically appealing, up from 30% in 2024.
The share of respondents who praised their pickup increased from 27% to 48%. Those who associated electric two-wheelers with trusted brands rose from 28% to 46%.
Owners appreciated their low running and maintenance costs, comfort, manoeuvrability, storage and digital features.
However, concerns over rough-road performance, highway suitability and vehicle longevity continue to influence buying decisions.
