Kanpur: Three individuals involved in online fraud via UPI were apprehended by a joint police team from Sachendi police station and the cyber branch. The cyber criminals, hailing from Madhya Pradesh, were nabbed with four mobile phones and eight hundred rupees in cash, as disclosed by Deputy Commissioner of Police West, Vijay Dhull, on Tuesday. The arrested suspects—Balveer Prajapati, Arun Prajapati, and Champalal—are residents of Aharbanpur village in the Mayapur police station area of Shivpuri district, Madhya Pradesh. Legal proceedings will be initiated against them, followed by their presentation in court and subsequent incarceration.
On April 16, Trivendra Singh, a resident of Katra Ghanshyam Nagar, filed a complaint at Sachendi police station, reporting that while he was away from home at the market, he fell victim to pickpocketing. Three assailants snatched his mobile phones and fled the scene. Subsequently, the accused individuals bypassed the keypad lock of Singh’s phone and fraudulently transferred Rs 2,67,309 from his bank account to another.
Upon receiving the complaint, the police launched an investigation, leading to the apprehension of the three culprits. During interrogation, the suspects confessed to their modus operandi, which involved targeting crowded areas in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Bihar to steal mobile phones and conduct online withdrawals from victims’ accounts. The police managed to recover Rs 77,309 from the victim’s account and facilitated its return. Charges under various sections, including the IT Act, were filed against the accused, who were subsequently remanded to judicial custody.
