Maintaining a healthy weight can reduce the risk of several lifestyle-related health problems.

The ideal weight for a particular height can vary depending on factors such as age, muscle mass, body fat and waist circumference.

Body Mass Index (BMI) provides a simple way to assess whether weight falls within a general healthy range for height. It is calculated by dividing weight in kilograms by height in metres squared. For example, a person weighing 60 kg and measuring 1.65 metres tall has a BMI of around 22.

As a broad estimate, a healthy weight range may be around 42–56 kg for someone who is 150 cm tall, 44–60 kg at 155 cm, 47–64 kg at 160 cm, 50–68 kg at 165 cm and 53–72 kg at 170 cm. These figures are only general estimates and should not be treated as fixed targets.

BMI has limitations, particularly for Indians and other South Asians.

People from these populations may carry more abdominal fat at lower BMI levels, which can increase the risk of conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease.

Being significantly underweight can affect health. Poor nutrition may contribute to muscle loss, weakness, low stamina and reduced immunity.

Excess body fat, meanwhile, can increase the risk of insulin resistance, high blood sugar, heart disease and fatty liver disease.

Maintaining a healthy weight through balanced nutrition and regular physical activity is therefore important.

Weight should be considered alongside other health indicators rather than assessed through height and BMI alone.
