Your urine may seem like mere waste, but according to urologists, it’s a powerful indicator of your kidney function.
Changes in colour, smell, or volume could be early signs of underlying health issues that demand attention.
Dr Hari Prasad N, Urologist and renal transplant specialist at Manipal Hospital, Vijayawada, says a healthy adult usually passes 1.5 to 2 litres of urine daily. “Normal urine is straw yellow in colour and mildly odorous,” he explains. “Darker or smelly urine often signals dehydration or infection.”
Dr Sanman Gowda, Head of Urology at KMC Hospital, Mangalore, highlights that the kidneys constantly filter toxins from our blood, and the resulting urine often reveals silent symptoms.
He further added, “Pain or burning can suggest an infection, while difficulty passing urine may point to prostate issues in men or bladder outlet obstruction in women.”
Blood in the urine, called haematuria, should never be ignored.
Dr Gowda explains it may be linked to kidney stones, tumours, or infections. Dr Prasad adds that up to 25% of patients with haematuria are later diagnosed with kidney, bladder, or prostate cancers.
“If you notice back pain, vomiting, changes in urine colour, or a drastic drop in urine volume, seek medical help immediately,” says Dr Gowda. He stresses that early diagnosis leads to better recovery and can prevent permanent damage.
Your kidneys work silently but tirelessly. Don’t overlook what your urine is telling you. Consulting a urologist at the first sign of abnormality may protect you from more serious health issues down the line.
