A new study indicates that both high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and resistance training (RT) play a potential role in slowing breast cancer cell growth, while also improving key health markers among survivors.
Researchers at Edith Cowan University (ECU) follow breast cancer survivors through a 12-week training programme to examine how two different exercise types influence the production of myokine proteins released by muscles during activity, known for their anti-cancer properties.
Blood samples analysed in laboratory tests reveal that participants in both groups significantly increase their myokine levels by the end of the programme.
The findings show that breast cancer cell growth falls by 22 per cent among participants undertaking resistance training and by 25 per cent among those performing HIIT.
The researchers emphasise that while both forms of exercise achieve similar anti-cancer effects, HIIT also correlates with a noticeable rise in lean muscle mass and a drop in body fat after 12 weeks.
Resistance training relies on external force, such as weights, to develop strength and muscle mass, whereas HIIT uses short bursts of high-intensity movement interspersed with brief recovery periods to enhance cardiovascular endurance.
The study suggests that although both methods produce anti-cancer effects, their additional benefits on body composition differ.
Lead researcher Francesco Bettariga highlights the importance of understanding how various exercise types generate different patterns of myokines and their cancer-suppressive potential.
The team concludes that regardless of the chosen activity, survivors gain measurable benefits from structured physical training.
