Doctors of a hospital in Bengaluru on Wednesday claimed that they have performed a rare heart re-transplant in the country.
A 32 years old engineer who underwent his first heart transplant in 2016 experienced recurrent heart failure leading to repeated hospitalization in next seven years. Finally he underwent a rare and complex heart re-transplant in December last year.
Informing about the success of the procedure cardiologists’ team led by Dr. Nagamalesh U.M. from Aster Hospitals said that despite the initial complications due to bleeding and rejection episode regular biopsies and close monitoring has ensured a successful recovery.

“The patient’s post-transplant course included significant bleeding events due to the second surgery and the ongoing requirement for blood thinners and rejections. However, through meticulous monitoring and regular endo-myocardial biopsies, these challenges were effectively managed,” said Dr. Nagamalesh, Director-Heart Failure, Transplant and MCS Programme, Aster Hospitals.
For the patient far few years has been tough and complicated as he experienced a ‘medical rollercoaster’. The engineer is doing fine as his heart re-plantation completes 6 months with no further complications.
Speaking on his challenging situation and finally receiving respite, Patient said, “Finding out that I needed a second transplant was a setback, however the exceptional team of surgeons extended their support throughout my treatment journey. I am immensely grateful.”
