PIB Warns SBI Customers About Fake Reward Point Scam Messages Containing Malicious APK Files

The Press Information Bureau’s (PIB) Fact Check Unit has debunked a viral message and warned SBI customers against fake reward point texts containing harmful APK files.

The viral message urged users to download and install an APK file to redeem SBI reward points.

PIB has called this claim completely fake and has also clarified that SBI never sends any APK file or link via SMS or WhatsApp.

The viral message read, ” Dear Value customer, Your SBI Netbanking Reward Points will expire today! Now Redeem through SBI REWARD App, Install & Claim your reward by cash deposit in your account.

In the above post, PIB also clarified that SBI never sends links or APK files over SMS or WhatsApp. It stressed the importance of not clicking on suspicious links or downloading any unknown files.

Cyber experts say that such APK files may contain malware, which can give hackers access to your phone.

This can lead to theft of not only your bank details but also your personal information.

Measures to avoid scams

Never click on suspicious links or download unknown APK files sent via SMS or WhatsApp.

Report fraudulent messages and phishing attempts to cybercrime authorities or your bank immediately.

Always verify reward offers or account updates directly with your bank through official channels.

People often click on random and unknown links in the guise of gaining awards and further fall trap to such scams, leading to loss of money and personal information.

Hence, the government authorities warn people to avoid any unknown site or link.
