Kerala On High Alert After Fresh Nipah Virus Death In Palakkad

Kerala has issued a health alert in six districts after a 58-year-old man from Kumaramputhur in Palakkad tested positive for the Nipah virus posthumously.

The patient, who had been undergoing treatment for fever and related symptoms, died at a private hospital in Perinthalmanna, Malappuram, on Saturday night.

The National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune, later confirmed Nipah infection through sample analysis, marking the second confirmed case in the district and raising concerns over the virus’s continued presence in the region.

Even before the NIV’s confirmation, health teams in Palakkad and Malappuram initiated aggressive contact tracing and preventive actions.

So far, 46 individuals who had recent contact with the deceased have been identified and placed under medical observation.

Kerala Health Minister Veena George said a detailed contact list and route map of the patient’s movements had been prepared.

Surveillance footage and family tree analyses have aided authorities in tracking possible exposures.

Enhanced vigilance & safety measures

Field surveillance in Kumaramputhur and surrounding areas has been intensified, with health workers conducting door-to-door visits to check for symptoms and spread awareness.

The use of face masks is now mandatory for patients, caregivers, and healthcare staff.

George also urged the public to avoid unnecessary hospital visits, particularly in the affected districts, and instructed hospitals to limit the number of bystanders to minimise the risk of transmission.

Currently, 543 individuals across Kerala are under medical observation:

• 219 in Palakkad
• 208 in Malappuram
• 114 in Kozhikode
• 2 in Ernakulam

Authorities have placed the districts of Kozhikode, Thrissur, Kannur, and Wayanad on high alert as a precautionary measure.

This incident marks Kerala’s sixth reported Nipah case within the past year.

Earlier fatalities included a 14-year-old boy in Pandikkad in July 2024 and a 24-year-old man in Wandoor in September 2024.

Health authorities have reiterated the importance of early detection, strict safety protocols, and public cooperation to prevent another outbreak of the deadly zoonotic virus, which is believed to be transmitted by the fruit bat.

With swift containment efforts underway, the state aims to control the spread and protect public health amidst growing concern.
