PIB Warns Public Against AI-Manipulated Video Of Finance Minister Promoting Fake Scheme

The Press Information Bureau (PIB) on Monday warned internet users about a digitally altered video showing Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman promoting a fake investment scheme. The video claims people can earn Rs 60,000 in 24 hours and Rs 10 lakh per month.

PIB Fact Check confirmed the video is entirely false and misleading. “A video on Facebook falsely shows Union Finance Minister @nsitharaman promoting an ‘investment program’ that promises easy daily income,” the bureau stated on X.

The agency urged people to stay cautious and verify such claims before taking financial action.

To spot altered videos, PIB recommended checking for distorted lips, unnatural voice sync, mismatched backgrounds, incorrect dates, or inconsistent logos. It also advised verifying links, ensuring they come from official government domains ending in .gov.in, and consulting trusted sources before sharing any information.

This warning follows a similar alert from the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) last week. BSE officials discovered that some miscreants are using photos of senior executives to create fake social media accounts claiming to offer wealth advisory services.

“It has come to our attention that photos of senior BSE officials are being used to create fake social media IDs. These IDs claim to provide a wealth advisory solution to mislead gullible investors,” the exchange said.

BSE clarified that its officials do not initiate or endorse any wealth management or advisory services. It urged investors not to trust recommendations from unverified social media accounts and to confirm the source before making any investment decisions.

Additionally, the exchange advised investors to deal only with registered intermediaries. Lists of authorised intermediaries are available on the official websites of SEBI and the BSE.
