The Press Information Bureau’s (PIB) fact-check unit on Friday officially dismissed reports circulating on social media and some media outlets that claimed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would distribute sindoor to women as part of a nationwide campaign marking the anniversary of the Modi government’s third term.
The false reports emerged shortly after the BJP announced plans for a large-scale outreach drive, beginning June 9, the anniversary of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s swearing-in for his third term.
This campaign aims to showcase the NDA government’s key achievements over the past 11 years.
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), the PIB fact-check unit categorically stated, “Some social media posts and media reports are claiming various decisions to mark the anniversary of Modi 3.0. The claim is fake.”
While the BJP has not yet officially disclosed the full details of its anniversary campaign, party leaders have revealed that it will include padyatras (foot marches) led by Union ministers and Members of Parliament across the country.
The campaign will highlight major milestones such as ‘Operation Sindoor’, a symbolic military operation, and the government’s position on conducting a caste census.
Before the PIB’s clarification, BJP leaders had already rejected the sindoor distribution claims.
Sambit Patra, a BJP Member of Parliament from Puri, called the reports ‘fake news’ and accused opposition parties of deliberately spreading misinformation to mislead the public.
The false narrative about sindoor distribution threatened to distract from the BJP’s broader agenda to engage with citizens and communicate its achievements.
The party’s focus remains on reinforcing its development narrative, showcasing government initiatives, and mobilising support through grassroots activities.
The fact-check from PIB reinforces the importance of verifying information circulating on social media and prevents the spread of baseless rumours that could distort public discourse.
The PIB’s prompt fact-check serves as a reminder that misinformation can quickly gain traction, especially around significant political events such as government anniversaries.
The BJP’s anniversary campaign is centred on padyatras and policy highlights, with no plans to distribute sindoor as falsely reported.
This clarification helps maintain focus on the government’s developmental achievements and ongoing outreach efforts.
