India Post Warns Public Against Fake SMS Redelivery Scam

India Post issues a public warning after reports emerge of fraudulent SMS messages claiming that parcels could not be delivered due to ‘incomplete addresses’.

The messages instruct recipients to update their address and pay a service fee to request redelivery.

The Postal Department clarifies that such messages are entirely fake and urges the public not to respond or share personal information.

The official India Post Twitter handle confirms that the department never asks customers to provide address updates or make payments via SMS. Officials stress that the fraudulent messages aim to steal personal data and money from unsuspecting recipients.

The Press Information Bureau (PIB) reinforces the advisory under its #PIBFactCheck initiative, highlighting that citizens must remain vigilant against such scams.

Taking to X, PIB Fact check posted, “India Post SMS Scam Alert! Have you received an SMS claiming your India Post package couldn’t be delivered due to ‘incomplete address’? The message further asks you to update your address & pay the service fee to request redelivery. #PIBFactCheck Beware! This message is #Fake @IndiaPostOfficeNEVER asks for address updates or payments through SMS. DO NOT click on such suspicious links !! It could be an attempt to steal your data & money. Stay alert, stay safe!”

Steps for Public Safety

Authorities advise recipients of suspicious messages to ignore them and refrain from clicking on any links or providing financial information.

India Post encourages users to verify any delivery concerns directly through official channels, including their website or designated customer service helplines.

Cybersecurity experts also recommend monitoring bank statements and personal accounts for unusual activity if one accidentally interacts with such messages.

The alert forms part of ongoing efforts by India Post and government agencies to raise awareness about online fraud and phishing attacks.

In recent months, multiple scams targeting delivery services have surfaced, emphasising the need for vigilance among digital users.

By issuing timely warnings, India Post aims to protect citizens from financial losses and identity theft while reinforcing the importance of using verified communication channels for all postal-related matters.
