Deep‑Fake Video Misattributes Divisive Remarks To India’s Army Chief, Watchdog Clarifies

In its latest bulletin, the Press Information Bureau (PIB) has stepped in to publicly debunk a video that purports to show India’s Army Chief, General Upendra Dwivedi, announcing the removal of all non‑caste Hindu soldiers in a ‘saffronised’ India.

Taking to X, PIB Fact Check posted, “Pakistani propaganda accounts are circulating a digitally altered video of the Chief of the Army Staff, General Upendra Dwivedi, making claims that all the non caste Hindu soldiers are being removed in a Saffronized India.”

The tweet further added, “Chief of the Army Staff, General Upendra Dwivedi, has NOT made any such statement! Stay alert. Do not forward content of this type. For authentic information, rely only on official sources.”

Accounts linked to Pakistani propaganda circulated the video. They used AI‑generated audio and video editing to present a highly inflammatory and false claim.

The bureau emphasised that General Dwivedi never made such a statement.

The original footage shows General Dwivedi addressing military‑related matters. It contains no mention whatsoever of caste‑based soldier removal or any such policy.

The fact‑check unit confirmed that editors had digitally altered the circulating clip.

Such deep‑fake videos pose serious risks: they aim to undermine public trust in the armed forces, exacerbate communal divides and escalate disinformation campaigns during sensitive times.

The PIB underlined that these kinds of content often form part of a broader hybrid warfare strategy.

In addition, the PIB has urged citizens to verify any message or video through trusted official channels and to avoid forwarding content whose authenticity they cannot establish. They also advised reporting suspicious posts to the PIB Fact Check unit via WhatsApp or email.

As the digital information landscape evolves, the incident underscores the importance of digital literacy. Before believing or sharing sensational content, users must check the source and its credibility.
