Smriti Irani On Reprising Tulsi Virani Role: ‘As A Politician, Nothing Makes Me Nervous’

Smriti Irani, former Union Minister and actress, will reprise her legendary role as Tulsi Virani in the much-anticipated reboot of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi.

The show, a defining part of Indian television history, is scheduled to air in three weeks.

Speaking to NDTV, Irani expressed no apprehension about returning to television after years in politics.

“I am a politician—nothing that you throw at me will make me nervous, ever,” she said with characteristic poise.

Reflecting on her journey, former Union Minister Smriti described her dual success in media and politics as a rare blessing.

“For a 49-year-old to have a 25-year run not only in media but also in politics—that’s a blessed run,” she noted.

Smriti credited her longevity in both industries to destiny and resilience.

“In our country’s history, rarely has someone managed, with God’s blessing, to remain at the top in both fields, especially as a woman. It’s no mean feat,” she said.

Reconnecting with audiences

While fans eagerly await her return to the small screen, Smriti remained humble about her cultural impact.

“I’m not being self-effacing, but I realise the responsibility that comes with having been part of people’s families and childhoods,” she shared.

She acknowledged the unique challenge of navigating both the ‘real’ and ‘reel’ worlds.

“To oscillate between these two, while being part of larger organisations like the BJP or a television network, and still maintain your identity—that’s what I’ve worked to do,” she added.

With the production of Kyunki’s reboot already underway, the mounting of such a large-scale show in just three weeks has generated buzz.

But Smriti, unfazed, stressed that political life had prepared her for high-pressure situations.

She emphasised her commitment to staying relatable, despite working in powerful systems.

“You’re one piece of a much larger ecosystem, but the goal is to still have a unique impact and connect with people,” she said.

Smriti Irani became a household name in the early 2000s with her portrayal of Tulsi Virani.

Her return marks a significant cultural moment for Indian television, reuniting fans with a character who once became a symbol of strength and tradition in Indian households.
