Ponniyin Selvan 2, Day 1 Box Office Collection: Mani Ratnam’s Magnum Opus Set To Be a ‘Record-Breaking’ Movie

Finally, the wait for Ponniyin Selvan 2 has ended as the movie has been released in theatres. Part two of Mani Ratnam’s magnum opus has been receiving immense love and good word of mouth and has a big bang at the box office opening on the first day of its release. As we all know, the first part of the film was a big hit in southern India as well. Seeing the reviews of the second part it seems that it will indeed become record-breaking.

Box office collection

According to earlier estimates, Director Ratnam’s movie earned nearly Rs 33-35 crores across languages on the first day. The advance booking of the movie was pegged to be around 10 crores. However, positive word of mouth has resulted in many flocking to the theatres to watch this grand movie. The first part of the instalment grossed Rs. 327 crores nearly in India and over Rs. 169 crores ($20.70 million) overseas. The global box office gross of the film stood around Rs. 496 crores.

PS2 has marked the second collaboration work of Miss World Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and South star Vikram after the 2010 film which was highly appreciated as well.

Casting crew of Ponniyin Selvan 2

Talking about the cast, the film features Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Karthi, Chiyaan Vikram, Trisha and Jayam Ravi in lead roles. Prakash Raj, Prabhu, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sobhita Dhulipala, Jayaram, Ashwin Kakumanu, Mohan Raman, Sarathkumar and Parthiban are part of the supporting cast. Composer AR Rahman, editor Sreekar Prasad and cinematographer Ravi Varman are part of the technical crew.

The second instalment of Ponniyin Selvan is based on Kalki Krishnamurthy’s 1955 novel of the same name. It will take off from the conclusion of the first movie, where the viewers saw Ponniyin Selvan facing his death, as Aishwarya Rai’s Oomai Rani jumps into the sea to save him. The film is bankrolled by Madras Talkies and Lyca Productions.
