Legendary actor Mithun Chakraborty will receive this year’s prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award. Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the honor on Monday through a post on X.
He stated, “From the streets of Kolkata to cinematic heights, Mithun Da’s remarkable journey inspires generations! I am honored to announce that the Dadasaheb Phalke Selection Jury has decided to award legendary actor Sh. Mithun Chakraborty Ji for his iconic contribution to Indian cinema.”
The ceremony will take place at the 70th National Film Awards on October 8. This recognition highlights Chakraborty’s significant impact on Indian cinema over the years.
Chakraborty began his acting journey with the 1976 film *Mrigayaa*, directed by Mrinal Sen. His powerful performance earned him the National Film Award for Best Actor. Moreover, the film achieved significant box office success, particularly in the former Soviet Union.

Subsequently, he became a household name with the release of *Disco Dancer* in 1982. This film not only captivated audiences in India but also became a blockbuster across Asia, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.
The announcement of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award comes just months after Chakraborty received the Padma Bhushan in April. He accepted this honor from President Droupadi Murmu and expressed his surprise at the recognition. “I have never asked for anything for myself from anyone.
When I received a call from the Home Ministry about the Padma Bhushan, I was silent for a minute because I had not expected it,” he remarked.
Chakraborty’s illustrious career features many iconic films, including *Agneepath*, *Mujhe Insaaf Chahiye*, *Hum Se Hai Zamana*, *Pasand Apni Apni*, *Ghar Ek Mandir*, and *Kasam Paida Karne Wale Ki*. In recent years, he appeared in *OMG: Oh My God*, showcasing his enduring presence in the industry.
Born Gouranga Chakraborty on June 16, 1950, Mithun Chakraborty has profoundly influenced Indian cinema. The Dadasaheb Phalke Award, India’s highest film honor, is presented annually at the National Film Awards ceremony by the Directorate of Film Festivals, established by the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
