Bollywood actor Hrithik Roshan has approached the Delhi High Court, filing a petition to safeguard his personality rights. The court may hear the case on October 15.
The actor seeks legal protection against the unauthorised use of his name, image, and voice.
In the petition, Hrithik alleges that several platforms and websites have used his photos, name, and voice without permission.
He also highlights the illegal sale of merchandise, including mugs and T-shirts, featuring his image and name.
The actor has requested the court to issue directions preventing such unauthorised commercial exploitation.
Hrithik further claims that this misuse not only harms his image but also violates his promotional and commercial rights. He seeks a comprehensive legal directive to restrict any platform from profiting from his identity without prior authorisation.
Precedents in Celebrity Personality Rights
This move follows similar cases in India where celebrities have sought legal remedies to protect their identity.
Recently, the High Court extended relief to film director Karan Johar.
Earlier, actors such as Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan approached the court to prevent unauthorised use of their personal likenesses.
In those cases, the court had prohibited websites and AI platforms from using their names, images, and signatures without consent.
Additionally, the court had instructed Google to remove or disable URLs linked to such misuse.
Prominent figures, including Amitabh Bachchan, Anil Kapoor, Rajinikanth, and Virat Kohli, have also turned to the judiciary to safeguard their personality rights.
Experts say these cases underline the growing importance of personality rights in India.
The judiciary increasingly recognises that celebrities’ names, images, and personal attributes are valuable commercial assets and cannot be exploited without consent.
Hrithik Roshan’s petition marks another significant step in enforcing these rights, as courts continue to balance freedom of expression with protection against commercial misuse.
