Drug Scandal Grips Tamil Film Industry After Major Chennai Police Crackdown

The Tamil film industry, popularly known as Kollywood, has come under serious scrutiny following a major anti-drugs operation led by the Chennai Police’s Anti-Narcotics Intelligence Unit (ANIU).

On Friday, police arrested three individuals in Seven Wells, including a former assistant director, exposing a network allegedly distributing OG ganja and possibly supplying it to people within the film fraternity.

Key arrests & seizures

Police identified the arrested individuals as Premkumar, 32, a former assistant director from Tondiarpet, Alex Santosh, 34, from Seven Wells, and Rajan, 36, of Wimco Nagar.

Authorities seized 750 grams of high-grade OG ganja, ₹15 lakh in cash, and a premium motorcycle suspected to be bought with drug money.

Investigators revealed that Premkumar had connections with a supplier named Aslam, believed to be operating from Malaysia.

Premkumar made several trips to Malaysia to coordinate the smuggling of narcotics, then stored them at his Chennai residence, repackaged them into smaller units, and distributed them through a well-organised network.

While Santosh managed financial logistics, including ATM withdrawals to avoid suspicion, Rajan oversaw the local distribution.

Police received reports that suppliers were allegedly providing OG ganja to individuals associated with the Tamil film industry, raising serious concerns. This has triggered a wider probe into potential recipients within Kollywood.

Cocaine case adds to industry’s woes

Authorities recently arrested actors Srikanth and Krishna in separate cocaine-related cases, adding to the growing scandal.

Medical reports confirmed Srikanth’s drug use, leading to his detention on 23 June; sources say Pradeep Kumar, a former AIADMK member now in custody, supplied the drugs.

Police arrested Krishna on 26 June based on WhatsApp links and confessions, but found no drugs on him.

The Madras High Court granted both actors conditional bail on 8 July and ordered them to report daily to the Nungambakkam police station.

Chennai Police, with international help, are pursuing Aslam and Augustine in Malaysia amid film industry calls for stricter drug monitoring.

As the investigation deepens, the Tamil film industry finds itself at a crossroads, facing both public and legal pressure to clean up its act and restore trust.

Chennai Police arrested three individuals: Premkumar, 32, a former assistant director from Tondiarpet, Alex Santosh, 34, of Seven Wells, and Rajan, 36, of Wimco Nagar.
