Bradley Cooper
Hollywood actor Bradley Cooper has opened up about his harrowing battle with drugs and alcohol, revealing that he once believed these struggles would lead to his demise.
Cooper, 48, shared his experiences during an episode of the National Geographic series ‘Running Wild With Bear Grylls: The Challenge.’
Survivalist Bear Grylls delved into Cooper’s past, prompting the actor to reflect on his tumultuous journey.
Cooper responded, “In terms of alcohol and drugs, yeah, but nothing to do with fame. But I was lucky. I got sober at 29 years old, and I’ve been sober for 19 years. Very lucky.”
Cooper had previously revealed that his substance use escalated after a career setback in 2003. Following an Achilles tendon injury and his departure from the series ‘Alias,’ he turned to drugs and alcohol.
His roommate and actor Will Arnett played a pivotal role in helping him realize the need for change in 2004.
However, Cooper’s battle with addiction resurfaced after the death of his father due to lung cancer in 2011. He recollected a period of nihilism, admitting, “I definitely had a nihilistic attitude towards life after, just like I thought ‘I’m going to die.”
Overcoming this dark phase, he found solace in embracing his true self and seeking inner peace.
Despite these challenges, Cooper persevered. His journey led him to direct and star in the acclaimed film ‘A Star Is Born,’ where he portrayed the character Jackson Maine, an addict.
Cooper noted that his personal experiences made it easier for him to delve into the role and give an authentic performance.
Cooper expressed gratitude for the roles he has had the opportunity to portray, considering them a blessing. He remains optimistic about his acting career and is set to appear in the Netflix film ‘Maestro,’ a biopic centered around Leonard Bernstein.
Cooper’s candid reflections on his battles, redemption, and growth serve as a testament to his resilience and determination to overcome challenges. His story underscores the importance of seeking help and finding strength in one’s journey toward recovery.
