Indian stock markets slipped on Wednesday, bringing an end to a three-session rally, as losses in technology shares and uneasy global signals dampened investor sentiment.
The benchmark indices finished in the red, with the Nifty declining by 198.50 points, or 0.81 per cent, to close at 24,378.10. The Sensex also registered a sharper fall, shedding 756.84 points, or 0.95 per cent, to settle at 78,516.49.
Market participants pointed to ongoing geopolitical strain in West Asia as a key factor behind the cautious mood.
Uncertainty persisted after negotiations between the United States and Iran failed to advance, raising concerns about prolonged instability in the region.
From a technical standpoint, analysts noted that the Nifty continues to face strong resistance in the 24,500–24,600 range.
On the lower side, the 24,350–24,300 band is seen as an important support zone. A sustained fall below this level could open the door to further declines towards 24,100–24,000.
In contrast to the headline indices, broader markets showed relative strength. The Nifty MidCap index managed a modest gain of 0.19 per cent, while the Nifty SmallCap index outperformed with a rise of 1.13 per cent.
Sector-wise, information technology stocks were the primary drag, with the Nifty IT index emerging as the weakest performer of the day. Financial and automobile shares also remained subdued, adding pressure to the benchmarks.
Global developments continued to influence domestic trading. While Washington extended a ceasefire arrangement with Tehran, uncertainty lingered after talks stalled.
US President Donald Trump described Iran’s leadership as ‘seriously fractured’ while announcing the extension on Truth Social.
The blockade at the Strait of Hormuz remained in place. This heightened concerns over energy supply disruptions and added to market nerves.
Tensions escalated after reports indicated that a proposed meeting between JD Vance and Iranian officials did not take place. Tehran declined to engage further.
Fragile global cues and sector-specific weakness kept sentiment subdued, analysts said. This persisted throughout the session. Even so, broader indices displayed resilience.
