Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal initiated the dispatch of India-made electrolyzers for a green hydrogen plant at Kandla Port on Tuesday.
The 1 MW plant, scheduled for completion by July 2025, will initially produce 18 kg of green hydrogen per hour. It will later scale up to a 10 MW capacity.
Kandla Port will become the first in India to operate a green hydrogen plant using domestically produced electrolyzers. L&T manufactured the electrolyzers in three months.
The Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) selected L&T for the project based on their experience with a similar plant in Hazira.
The plant’s green hydrogen will power fuel cells, providing clean energy for port operations. The project also includes plans to integrate green ammonia production.
This aligns with the National Green Hydrogen Mission, which promotes sustainable practices in the maritime sector.
The plant will produce 80-90 tonnes of green hydrogen annually, supporting cleaner energy solutions within the port.
This achievement positions DPA Kandla as a leader in sustainable port operations in India.
The use of India-made electrolyzers highlights the ‘Make in India’ initiative, boosting local manufacturing and technological advancements.
Site work at Kandla is complete, and on-site assembly of the electrolyzers will begin soon.
The plant aims to give engineers and technicians hands-on experience in green hydrogen production, storage, and handling.
Electrolysers are essential for green hydrogen production, facilitating the hydrogen generation process.
