Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya announced that Indian graduate employability has risen from 33.95% in 2013 to 54.81% in 2024, thanks to government skill-building initiatives meeting global demand for skilled professionals.
Mandaviya highlighted India’s Skill India Scheme, which has trained over 1.5 crore youth in AI, robotics, and digital technologies.
These initiatives have equipped young people with the skills required for the future job market. As a result, the employability of Indian graduates has improved by 61%, with more young Indians now prepared to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving workforce.
Mandaviya spoke at the inauguration of the BIMSTEC Youth Summit in Gandhinagar. The Summit, which brings together member countries from the BIMSTEC region, is focused on fostering collaboration and youth-led development.
The BIMSTEC countries collectively represent about 22% of the global population, with a combined GDP of USD 4.5 trillion. Mandaviya emphasized the potential of this region for collective growth, with over 60% of the population below 35 years old.
Mandaviya reaffirmed India’s commitment to leading BIMSTEC development with its resources, expertise, and vision. He noted that the region’s youth could drive shared prosperity through collaboration. “BIMSTEC is not just about governments working together, but about connecting people and empowering youth,” he said.
The Minister emphasized that the summit would promote youth engagement for sustainable development, security, and economic prosperity in the region.
Mandaviya also touched on India’s bid to host the 2036 Olympics, which he said would further strengthen the sporting ecosystem within BIMSTEC.
The event, he noted, would attract global investments, enhance training facilities, and foster international sports partnerships. This, in turn, would create new opportunities for young athletes and promote excellence in regional sports.
The Union Minister reflected on India’s significant transformation over the past decade, particularly in terms of economic development. As India aims to achieve a USD 7 trillion economy by 2030 and a USD 30 trillion economy by 2047, Mandaviya emphasized that the country’s growth is driven by aspirations.
Mandaviya highlighted the World Economic Forum’s “Future of Jobs Report,” which predicts 170 million new jobs globally by 2030.
The five-day BIMSTEC Youth Summit is organized by the Department of Youth Affairs, Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Government of India.
The primary objective of the summit is to facilitate the exchange of experiences and youth-led initiatives among member countries, centered around the theme “Youth as a Bridge for Intra-BIMSTEC Exchange.”
Through this summit, the BIMSTEC region seeks to harness the collective energy of young leaders to advance shared goals and foster sustainable regional development.
