In a significant political development, Atishi, the AAP leader, submitted her resignation as Delhi Chief Minister to Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena on Sunday, following the party’s crushing defeat in the Delhi Assembly elections.
Atishi, a key strategist for AAP, handed over her resignation letter to LG V.K. Saxena at the Delhi Secretariat. While AAP suffered a major setback in the elections, Atishi was able to retain her Kalkaji seat, defeating BJP’s Ramesh Bidhuri by a margin of 3,521 votes.
However, her victory stood out as one of the few successes for AAP in an otherwise disappointing electoral performance.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged victorious in the Delhi Assembly elections on Saturday, bringing an end to AAP’s decade-long dominance in the capital.
The BJP’s landslide victory signifies not just a political shift in Delhi but also a change in public sentiment. The elections showed that promises of freebies and subsidies no longer guarantee electoral success, with voters opting for a different approach.
This win marks a significant milestone for the BJP, consolidating its position in North India, where it now governs neighboring states such as Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Rajasthan.
The party’s strong performance in border constituencies, particularly those near Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, played a pivotal role in its success.
Despite its efforts, AAP failed to win over voters, with the party’s focus on issues like water contamination in the Yamuna and its confrontational stance with the Centre and Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor proving ineffective. Additionally, AAP’s handling of the stubble-burning issue in Punjab faced criticism, as voters perceived the party’s constant disputes as diversionary tactics rather than addressing key concerns.
For the BJP, this victory marks a long-awaited return to power in Delhi after the crushing defeats in the 2015 and 2020 elections. With a decisive mandate, the party is now poised to implement its vision for the national capital, signaling the end of the AAP era in Delhi politics.
This change in governance reflects a broader shift in Delhi’s political landscape, where voters have chosen a new direction for the city’s future. As BJP sets the stage for its policies, the outcome of this election will shape Delhi’s political trajectory for years to come.
