
The Indian scooter industry has achieved a remarkable milestone, selling 68.53 lakh units in the financial year ending March 31, 2025 (FY2025), marking a 17% year-on-year (YoY) increase.
This record sales figure surpasses the previous best of FY2018, which saw 67.1 lakh units sold.
The industry’s growth can be attributed to the launch of new models, a strong revival of demand from rural and semi-urban areas, and a significant increase in electric scooter sales.
EV Growth & Market Share Shifts
Electric two-wheelers played a crucial role in the market’s performance, with over 7.73 lakh electric scooters sold, accounting for 11% of the total scooter sales.
Among the leaders in the EV space, Ather Energy, Bajaj Auto, and TVS Motor Co saw substantial growth.
Bajaj Auto doubled its market share, while Ather Energy’s Rizta family e-scooter surged by 44%, contributing to a 44% YoY increase in sales.
Honda Activa Leads; TVS & Bajaj Gain Market Share
Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI) retained its top position with 28.4 lakh units sold, though its market share dipped slightly from 43.33% in FY2024 to 41.50%.
TVS Motor Co, with models like the Jupiter 110 and NTorq, sold 18.3 lakh units, reflecting a 25% YoY increase and a rise in market share to 26%.
Bajaj Auto, which sold over 2.77 lakh scooters, saw a dramatic 140% increase in sales, boosting its market share to 4%.
Strong Performance From Suzuki, Hero MotoCorp, & Yamaha
Suzuki Motorcycle India performed well with a 15% increase in sales, reaching 10.24 lakh units, while Yamaha’s sales grew by 13%, reaching 3.1 lakh units.
However, Yamaha’s market share slipped slightly to 4.51% from 4.71%.
Hero MotoCorp, despite a 2% YoY decline in overall sales to 3.91 lakh units, saw significant gains in its electric scooter segment, with Vida V1 and V2 sales jumping by 195%, reaching 58,500 units.
Impressive Monthly Sales Figures
The Indian scooter industry consistently exceeded 5 lakh units per month throughout FY2025.
The festive season saw a peak of 7.21 lakh units in October, while the months of August and September surpassed 6 lakh units each.
The average monthly sales for the fiscal year stood at over 5.71 lakh units, translating to more than 18,500 scooters sold daily.
The growth of the Indian scooter market, driven by both internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric scooters, highlights a transformative shift towards cleaner, more sustainable mobility solutions.
The industry’s strong performance in FY2025 positions it for continued growth, especially as electric scooters gain more traction and further investments are made in infrastructure and technology.
