India Dominates Mobile Manufacturing in 9 Years
India’s mobile manufacturing landscape has undergone a transformative shift, largely credited to the initiatives of the Modi government. The culmination of these efforts is evident as, by 2023, every mobile device used in India is proudly labeled “Made in India,” marking a momentous achievement spurred by government policies. Amitabh Kant, former CEO of NITI Aayog, has presented compelling data that positions India as the world’s second-largest producer in mobile manufacturing.
In 2014, a staggering 81% of India’s mobile phones were imported from China. Fast forward to the present, and according to Kant’s data, the entire spectrum of phones used in India is now domestically manufactured—a testament to the remarkable turnaround. Over the past nine years, India has not only secured its position as a major global player but has also churned out a staggering 2 billion mobile headsets, showcasing the robustness of its manufacturing capabilities. Projections indicate that India is poised to manufacture approximately 270 million mobile headsets by 2023, underscoring the tangible impact of the sustained efforts by the Modi government.

The transformative nature of this shift becomes even more apparent when considering India’s reversal from being dependent on China for 81% of mobile consumption to now exporting over 20% of phones and headsets. This not only symbolizes economic self-sufficiency but also highlights India’s emergence as a net exporter in this critical industry. Notably, the annual compound growth rate in mobile production has surged by an impressive 23% since 2014, providing a quantitative measure of the substantial progress witnessed in the sector.
In essence, India’s mobile manufacturing success story reflects not just a shift in production dynamics but a strategic repositioning on the global stage, propelled by concerted government efforts and a burgeoning domestic industry.
