Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections rose 12.6 per cent year-on-year to a record ₹2.37 lakh crore in April, indicating strong economic activity and March-end reconciliation by businesses.
The mop-up was ₹2.10 lakh crore in April 2024 — the second-highest since GST launched on 1 July 2017. In March 2025, GST collections stood at ₹1.96 lakh crore.
As per the latest government data released on Thursday, GST revenue from domestic transactions rose 10.7 per cent to about ₹1.9 lakh crore. Revenue from imported goods increased 20.8 per cent to ₹46,913 crore.

Deloitte India Partner M S Mani said net GST collections crossing ₹2 lakh crore in the first month of the fiscal reflect robust performance in March 2025. He noted that collections were uniformly high across major states, ranging from 11 to 16 per cent growth — unlike previous months with varied state-wise trends.
EY Tax Partner Saurabh Agarwal said record GST collections highlight the economy’s resilience despite global uncertainty. He credited the government’s faster export and GST refunds for easing working capital stress, which may benefit consumers in the longer term.
KPMG Indirect Tax Head & Partner Abhishek Jain noted the all-time high GST collections reflect both economic growth and the impact of year-end reconciliation. He said businesses often make extra payments during this period to align returns.
While experts expect a slight moderation in GST collections next month due to global factors, they maintain a positive outlook for India’s economic momentum.
