An official statement states that government has taken the necessary steps to fulfil the projected peak power demand of 235 GW in May and 240 GW in June.
“With various measures, we have been able to successfully meet the peak evening power demand of 224 GW during April 2024,” the Ministry of Power on Friday.
The power demand is projected to peak at 235 GW during the day-time and 225 GW during evening hours for May and 240 GW during day-time and 235 GW during evening hours for June 2024, it said in the statement.
The power ministry has projected that this summer’s peak demand will be approximately 260 GW.
The ministry provided more details on the actions, stating that in addition to coal-based units, section 11 directives have been sent to gas-based power plants instructing them to utilize their whole capacity for the production of energy.
By optimizing the generation of hydropower, an extra 4 GW is now available to meet the demand in May and June.
According to the government, an additional 5 GW has been available for the summer due to the rescheduling of planned maintenance and the reduction of forced and partial outages of thermal power facilities.
In addition, a 4–5 GW boost in wind power generation is anticipated in May and June.
“With these measures in place and the current generation trend…it is expected that the power demand would be adequately met both during the day and during night hours in the summer months of May and June 2024,” the statement said.
