Asiana Airlines Stops Emergency Seat Ticket Sales

Following a recent incident in which a man allegedly opened an emergency escape door midair, sparking panic, Asiana Airlines in South Korea has prohibited selling tickets for some emergency exit row seats.

The airline said in a statement that the seats are numbered 26A on 174-seat A321s and number 31A on 195-seat aircraft. These seats are near the centre of the fuselage, closest to the doors on the single-aisle aircraft’s left-hand side.

“This measure is a safety precaution and applies even if the flight is full”, the statement added.

This past Friday, a passenger aboard an Asiana Airlines flight opened an emergency exit as it was preparing to land, the carrier said, adding that the plane landed safely but several people were hospitalized.

On a domestic flight, the Airbus A321-200 carried approximately 200 passengers as it neared the runway at Daegu International Airport, roughly 240 kilometres (149 miles) southeast of Seoul.

Asiana Airlines said, “The unexpected opening of the door caused some passengers to have breathing difficulties, and some people were taken to a hospital after the landing”.

“There were no major injuries or damage”, Asiana Airlines added.
