Adani's Green Ammonia Co-Firing Initiative Takes Off at Mundra Plant

As global leaders gather in the UAE for the UN Climate Change Conference (COP 28) from November 30 to December 12, 2023, to accelerate energy transition and reduce emissions by 2030, Adani Power Limited, India’s largest private sector power generator, has initiated an unprecedented Green Ammonia combustion pilot project as part of its comprehensive decarbonization initiative at its Mundra plant.

In this project, a 20% blend of Green Ammonia, produced from Green Hydrogen through electrolysis using renewable energy, will be co-fired in the boilers of the 330 MW unit at Mundra plant, traditionally fueled by coal.

Green Ammonia, being free of carbon, serves as a carbon-neutral alternative for feedstock in boilers, preventing the release of carbon dioxide during combustion. Adani Power has already set a benchmark in the industry by establishing a ‘per-unit’ emission benchmark and incorporating advanced ‘Ultra Supercritical Technology’ in its new plants.

Adani Power has also partnered with IHI and Kowa-Japan to extend the pilot and testing phase to other APL units and stations. Kowa, active in energy conservation and energy construction products, collaborates with IHI, a heavy industry company possessing Ammonia firing technology. Testing with a 20% ammonia blend is underway at the IHI facility in Japan, and the partners anticipate favorable outcomes after achieving economic parity between the feedstocks, making the Mundra Power Station the first location outside Japan selected for this cutting-edge Green initiative.

This ambitious project is conceived under the Japan-India Clean Energy Partnership (JICEP), aimed at ensuring energy security, achieving carbon neutrality, and fostering economic development. It falls under the “International Demonstration Project for Japanese Technologies Contributing to Decarbonization and Energy Transition” by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), Japan’s National Research and Development Agency promoting technological innovation for sustainable societal development.
