Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ) has set a new global benchmark in sustainable maritime development by unveiling the world’s first steel slag road inside a private port.
Located within Hazira Port in Surat, the 1.1-kilometre road links the Multi-Purpose Berth (MPB-1) to the coal yard, serving as a key transport artery within the port complex.
This groundbreaking infrastructure project marks India’s third steel slag road but stands out as the first of its kind globally at any private port, positioning both APSEZ and the country at the forefront of green innovation in logistics.
The road has been constructed using processed steel slag aggregates — an industrial by-product from steel manufacturing.
This approach transforms waste into high-performance, durable road infrastructure, reinforcing India’s commitment to circular economy principles.
Company officials noted that the design enables greater load-bearing strength and extended lifespan while reducing construction costs and carbon footprint.
Strategic collaborations
Developed under Phase II of the Bulk and General Cargo Terminal (BGCT) expansion, the project was a collaborative effort between APSEZ, the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research–Central Road Research Institute (CSIR-CRRI), and the Union Ministry of Science and Technology.
The CSIR-CRRI led the engineering design, creating a flexible pavement structure tailored to port needs.
Vijay Kumar Saraswat, Member (Science and Technology) at NITI Aayog, inaugurated the road alongside N. Kalaiselvi, Director-General of CSIR and Secretary of DSIR, and Manoranjan Parida, Director of CSIR-CRRI and President of the Indian Roads Congress.
The event also featured Satish Pandey, Senior Principal Scientist and inventor of the steel slag road technology, Anand Marathe, COO of Adani Hazira Port Ltd., and other dignitaries and researchers.
Moreover, their presence underscored the scientific significance and practical success of the project.
“With this initiative, APSEZ continues to lead the transformation of India’s logistics sector, blending innovation, industrial ecology, and infrastructure resilience in service of national growth,” the company stated.
The project supports the government’s Waste to Wealth mission and sets a precedent for eco-conscious infrastructure development across the country.
