Spinner Shree Charani delivered an impressive four-wicket performance as world champions India bowled out Zimbabwe for 197 in 49.5 overs in the opening match of their three-ODI series at the BCA Stadium in Kotambi, near Vadodara, on Friday.

Zimbabwe elected to bat after winning the toss but lost opener Loryn Phiri early. Kranti Gaud caught and bowled Phiri in the third over.

However, wicketkeeper Richa Ghosh dropped a catch in the same over, allowing Chipo Mugeri-Tiripano to continue batting.

India missed another opportunity when vice-captain Deepti Sharma dropped a catch in the slips.

Zimbabwe reached 46/1 at the end of the powerplay, with Mugeri-Tiripano and Modester Mupachikwa attempting to build a partnership.

Captain Smriti Mandhana introduced Charani after the fielding restrictions ended. The spinner trapped Mugeri-Tiripano leg before wicket for 21 before dismissing Mupachikwa for 25 in the 15th over.

Deepti then removed Sharne Mayers for eight, putting Zimbabwe under further pressure. Beloved Biza and Nyasha Gwanzura steadied the innings, taking their team past 100 in the 26th over. Charani later dismissed Gwanzura for 13.

Biza continued to resist and completed her half-century in the 35th over. However, Gaud bowled Chiedza Dhururu for 10 in the same over.

Michelle Mavunga added momentum with an aggressive 29 off 23 balls, but Charani dismissed her in the 43rd over to complete her four-wicket haul.

Shafali Verma removed stand-in captain Nomvelo Sibanda, while Gaud ended Biza’s innings at 62 off 92 balls, including four boundaries.

Deepti bowled Tendai Makusha in the penultimate over to seal Zimbabwe’s innings at 197.

Charani finished with figures of 4-23, Gaud claimed 3-42, Deepti took two wickets, and Shafali picked up one.

Brief Scores: Zimbabwe Women 197 all out in 49.5 overs (Beloved Biza 62, Michelle Mavunga 29; Shree Charani 4-23, Kranti Gaud 3-42) against India Women.
