Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for projects worth Rs 8,941 crore to rejuvenate the Yamuna in Delhi, setting a target to purify the river by May 2029.
Addressing the gathering, Shah said Prime Minister Narendra Modi convened a meeting soon after the BJP formed the government in Delhi to outline a plan for cleaning the river. He claimed the government had achieved more than 40 per cent progress in a short period.
Shah said officials inaugurated 10 projects and initiated work on 33 others. The initiatives include upgrading existing sewage treatment plants (STPs), installing new facilities, establishing decentralised sewage pumping stations and connecting households to sewer networks. The projects aim to treat wastewater before it enters the Yamuna.
Delhi Lieutenant Governor T S Sandhu, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and other dignitaries attended the event.
Shah criticised the previous Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-led government, accusing it of making excuses and failing to clean the river. He said the current government had prepared a three-year action plan to provide sewer connections to every household and ensure access to clean drinking water.
The Home Minister further said the Delhi government, with support from the Centre, had removed 2.17 crore metric tonnes of garbage and reclaimed 100 acres of land.
He added that the Okhla and Bhalswa landfill mounds had shrunk by 30–40 metres, while Ghazipur’s height had decreased by 10–15 metres.
Shah highlighted projects at Asita East, Bansera and Vasudev Ghat near Sarai Kale Khan and ITO. He said the government planned to replace landfill sites with gardens within two years.
