One person was killed and several others injured in clashes between two communities in Manipur’s Thoubal district, prompting authorities to impose prohibitory orders in two areas, police said on Monday.

According to a police official in Imphal, violence broke out in Khangabok village, around 25 km south of Imphal, on Sunday night.

A group allegedly pelted stones at a ground hosting a music concert, triggering further clashes in Khangabok and neighbouring Sangaiyumpham.

Several houses and vehicles were set on fire during the violence. Unidentified miscreants opened fire, hitting Laishram Rakesh in the head. He was taken to a nearby hospital but later died from his injuries.

Several other people sustained minor injuries from stone-pelting and received hospital treatment.

Authorities deployed additional state and central security forces in the affected villages to prevent further violence.

Police said the situation was under control on Monday morning.

The Thoubal district magistrate issued orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) on Sunday night.

The restrictions directed residents of Khangabok and Sangaiyumpham not to leave their homes from 11 PM.

The order cited concerns over public tranquillity and threats to lives and property. It did not specify when the restrictions would end.

More than 25 houses were set ablaze in separate incidents in Manipur’s Kamjong district over 24 hours.

Suspected militants reportedly targeted Naga- and Kuki-inhabited areas, forcing civilians to flee to forests and a nearby security camp.

Around 14 abandoned Naga-owned houses were burnt at Pilong and Skipe villages along the India-Myanmar border on Sunday.

Police said additional security forces were deployed following the incidents. The houses had been deserted after earlier attacks.
