Heavy rain and thunderstorms swept parts of Delhi-NCR on Thursday, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue an orange alert. Dark clouds covered the national Capital as the weather agency forecast more rainfall, lightning and gusty winds on Friday, October 16.
The IMD warned of moderate to intense showers across north and northwest Delhi. Winds could reach 40-50 kmph, with gusts touching 60 kmph. Other areas may experience lighter rain and thunderstorms.
The sudden weather change brought relief from recent warm conditions. The IMD forecast cloudy skies and moderate rainfall throughout Thursday. Delhi’s maximum temperature is expected to remain around 29 degrees Celsius, below earlier levels this week.
A western disturbance has triggered the rainfall. This weather system moves eastwards from regions west of India and often brings rain and thunderstorms across northern India.
Further showers could affect Noida, Gurugram, Ghaziabad and Faridabad. Rainfall intensity may vary across these areas.
The IMD expects conditions to become drier from Saturday, October 17. Delhi may experience partly cloudy skies, with the maximum temperature rising to around 32 degrees Celsius.
By Sunday, October 18, skies are likely to become mainly clear. Daytime temperatures could increase further.
Heavy showers, lightning and strong winds may disrupt traffic and outdoor activities. Waterlogging could slow commuters, particularly during peak hours.
Rainfall may temporarily remove dust from the air and offer some relief from pollution. However, any improvement in Delhi’s air quality will depend on rainfall intensity and subsequent wind conditions.
