Bombay High Court Directs CBFC To Decide On Sanjay Sharma’s ‘Sahiya’ By October 27

The Bombay High Court has directed the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to deliver its final decision on producer-director Sanjay Sharma’s film ‘Sahiya’ by October 27. The court has scheduled the next hearing for November 2 to review the Board’s decision.

Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal represented Sharma through video conferencing. Advocates S M Haider, Abdul Talha, Mohammad Shaz and Surbhi joined his legal team.

The CBFC’s counsel informed the court that a Revising Committee would be constituted on October 23. Sharma’s lawyers objected, arguing that the date did not establish a deadline for the final decision.

Sharma’s team submitted the certification application on May 30, 2026. According to the producer, the film underwent screening, examination and revision before the CBFC refused certification on August 27.

The first screening took place in July, followed by a Revising Committee screening in August.

The Board cited concerns about the alleged glorification of violence and anti-social activities. Sharma maintains that viewers must assess the film’s complete narrative and message, describing it as a love story rather than an endorsement of violence.

The producer approached the High Court after the refusal delayed the film’s proposed release and prevented it from reaching audiences.

Set in Jharkhand, ‘Sahiya’ follows a newly married couple whose lives become entangled in violence, fear and suspicion. Neeraj Kabi, Shantanu Maheshwari, Rinku Rajguru and Ishtiyak Khan star in the film.

Sharma argues that the story explores love, human emotions and the suffering of innocent people caught in violent conflict. He questioned objections to its portrayal of forests and Adivasi communities and its filming in Jharkhand.

The CBFC must now issue its final order by October 27. The court will revisit the matter on November 2.
