Delhi’s water shortage has raised serious questions about tanker supplies, with allegations that some people may be exploiting residents’ dependence on water for profit.

Bharat Express’s Special Investigation Team conducted an undercover probe across Keshopur, Peeragarhi, Janakpuri, Sonia Vihar, Rohini and Mangolpuri to investigate tanker arrangements and prices.

Residents across the capital struggle to secure water for drinking and daily household needs. The shortage has also sparked a political dispute, with the government citing supply challenges and the opposition alleging a tanker mafia and corruption.

Undercover reporter Raju Gupta visited the Delhi Jal Board’s sewage treatment plant in Keshopur, where an employee quoted ₹2,200 for two tankers and an extra ₹400 for potable water, claiming he would handle any police issues.

At the board’s Peeragarhi pumping station, a person quoted ₹1,300 for a 5,000-litre tanker.

In Janakpuri’s D-Block, a person at the water emergency office mentioned GPS-equipped tankers and referred the reporter to someone called Lucky. Another supplier offered daily deliveries at ₹1,200 per tanker.

In Sonia Vihar, a tanker reportedly cost ₹2,000, while suppliers in Rohini and Mangolpuri quoted ₹1,000 each.

The varying rates raised questions about pricing and supply arrangements, though they do not prove illegal activity.

Authorities must verify the allegations of unauthorised payments and examine supply records. Water shortages continue to disrupt residents’ daily lives, from cooking and cleaning to bathing.

Bharat Express’s investigation has raised questions about tanker pricing, supply procedures and accountability. Authorities must establish where suppliers obtain water, whether they operate legally and whether officials follow prescribed rules.

Any proven irregularities should invite appropriate action. The government must also ensure transparent, reliable water supplies so residents can access this basic necessity without unnecessary hardship.
