Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday aimed at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi after the BJP won the Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation (GMC) election, using the result to question the Opposition’s criticism of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

The BJP captured 38 of the corporation’s 44 seats, whereas the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) failed to secure a single seat.

Shah pointed out that AAP candidates lost their election deposits in all 32 constituencies they contested.

“The AAP contested 32 seats and lost its deposit in all 32,” Shah said. He further linked the BJP’s performance to voter support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Referring to the Opposition’s objections to SIR, the Home Minister asked, “Is this the result of SIR?”

Shah maintained that the BJP’s electoral gains and PM Modi’s popularity should not simply be attributed to changes in electoral rolls.

State Election Commission figures showed that the BJP received 56.46 per cent of the vote in 2026. The party’s vote share, however, stood at 46.11 per cent in the 2021 election. Despite the increase in vote share, the BJP’s seat count dropped from 41 to 38.

The Congress expanded its presence from two seats to five, with its vote share climbing from 27.79 per cent to 37.05 per cent.

AAP’s share of the vote declined from 22.22 per cent to 4.38 per cent.

Shah called on the Congress leadership to assess the reasons behind its continued setbacks in Gujarat. He claimed that the party had not won an election in the state for 41 years.

The BJP, however, maintained control of the Thara and Okha municipalities. In Thara, the party secured 19 of the 24 seats, leaving five for the Congress.

In Okha, the BJP won 33 of the 36 seats, including four uncontested victories. The Congress, however, secured the remaining three seats through polling.
