West Indies players Rovman Powell and Sherfane Rutherford have received official reprimands and one demerit point each for breaching the ICC Code of Conduct during Friday’s second T20I against India in Ranchi.
Powell was sanctioned for striking the ball away with his bat after he was dismissed.
Rutherford received a reprimand for showing dissent towards an umpire’s decision during the match.
According to the ICC, Powell breached Article 2.2 of the Code of Conduct, which covers the abuse of cricket equipment, clothing, ground equipment, fixtures and fittings during an international match.
The incident occurred in the sixth over of the West Indies innings after India pacer Mayank Yadav bowled Powell.
Rutherford breached Article 2.8, which concerns dissent towards an umpire’s decision.
During the 13th over, Rutherford reportedly shouted aggressively at the umpire after the official ruled a delivery legitimate despite Rutherford believing it was wide.
Both players admitted their respective offences and accepted the sanctions proposed by match referee Prakash Bhatt of the Emirates ICC International Panel of Match Referees.
The admissions meant that formal hearings were unnecessary.
The ICC confirmed that both players received one demerit point each. These were their first offences within 24 months.
West Indies captain Shai Hope struck a century off 45 balls, while Rutherford smashed 84 from 37 deliveries as the visitors defeated India by six wickets.
West Indies chased down India’s target of 250, recording the second-highest successful run chase in men’s T20I cricket.
Hope and Rutherford added 120 runs for the fourth wicket after Mayank Yadav’s powerplay hat-trick reduced West Indies to 44/3. Their partnership became West Indies’ highest fourth-wicket stand in T20Is and the third-highest fourth-wicket partnership against India in the format.
