Dharavi Redevelopment: Pranav Adani Begins Construction Of 10 Towers With 10,432 Homes

Pranav Adani, Director of Adani Enterprises Limited (AEL), performed the Bhoomi Poojan at the 22-acre Matunga railway site on Monday, marking the start of rehabilitation construction under the Dharavi redevelopment project.

Dharavi, one of Asia’s largest informal settlements, is home to more than one million people.

Adani Navbharat Developers Private Limited (ANDPL), the project’s special purpose vehicle, will provide eligible residents with 350-square-foot homes under the in-situ rehabilitation scheme.

The project, however, includes 10 towers, housing 10,432 rehabilitation apartments and 1,379 commercial and industrial units.

“Every family deserves a home where they feel secure and can plan for the future,” Adani said, highlighting the project’s aim of improving living conditions for Dharavi families.

Eligible residents from Sectors 6 and 1 will receive homes at Matunga first. Nearly 4,500 apartments will then go to other eligible Dharavi residents on a priority basis.

ANDPL will hand over the towers to the Dharavi Redevelopment Project/Slum Rehabilitation Authority (DRP/SRA) in three phases: the first five by March 2029, the next two by August 2029 and the remaining three by August 2030.

Maharashtra Additional Chief Secretary for Urban Development Aseem Kumar Gupta attended the ceremony as Guest of Honour. DRP/SRA Chief Executive Officer Mahendra Kalyankar also attended the ceremony.

Kalyankar said the project would prioritise safe, modern homes and infrastructure to improve residents’ quality of life.

Each tower will have 37 to 39 storeys, passenger lifts and dedicated fire lifts.

Planned amenities include a kindergarten, community hall, podium gardens, seating areas, society offices and places of worship.

ANDPL will maintain the buildings and shared infrastructure for 10 years after handover.

The wider redevelopment plan envisages shops, schools, healthcare facilities, parks, public transport and essential services within a 15-minute walk.

The construction launch, however, follows Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’s inauguration of the Dharavi Experience Centre on Gandhi Jayanti.

The centre showcases proposed homes and neighbourhood facilities through sample apartments, a 3D walkthrough and interactive displays.
