CJI Surya Kant on Monday explained why he declined the INDIA bloc leaders’ meeting request. He stressed that the Supreme Court remains open to every citizen and addresses grievances in accordance with the law.
Speaking to reporters, the CJI said he received the leaders’ letter on Sunday and sent his reply that night. He said he had outlined reasons for declining the meeting but maintained the correspondence’s confidentiality.
“The doors of the Supreme Court are open to everyone,” CJI Surya Kant said. He assured every citizen, including elected representatives, that the court would hear grievances under the law and grant relief wherever warranted.
Earlier, the CJI had declined the Congress-led Opposition bloc’s request for a meeting ahead of its planned march to the Supreme Court on Monday.
Reports said he advised the delegation to file a petition because the issues it intended to raise were already sub judice.
The CJI reportedly said the judiciary could not meet a political party’s delegation administratively and must instead hear petitions and deliver judgments. He reaffirmed the Supreme Court’s commitment to protecting every citizen’s fundamental rights.
Despite the refusal, the INDIA bloc’s planned march was likely to proceed. Opposition parties have demanded Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Lok Sabha Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi called the march “not of a political party, but of all Indians”. He accused the government of benefiting from the SIR exercise, deepening the rift between the Opposition and the Election Commission.
INDIA bloc leaders submitted a charter of demands to President Droupadi Murmu last Friday. The document outlined four key demands on electoral reforms and alleged vote manipulation.
