Prime Minister Narendra Modi has pledged all possible support to Manipur’s efforts to overcome unrest and re-establish normalcy, officials said on Saturday.
According to a senior official from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), PM Modi gave this assurance during a meeting with Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh at his official residence at 7, Lok Kalyan Marg, in New Delhi.
During the meeting, Khemchand Singh updated PM Modi on measures taken by his government to improve the situation.
These included restarting the Imphal-Dimapur-Guwahati bus service and facilitating the uninterrupted movement of trucks carrying goods along National Highways 37 and 2.
The Chief Minister also discussed efforts to rebuild confidence between different communities.
He sought the Prime Minister’s approval to upgrade selected state highways to national highway status and requested that the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Imphal be elevated to the status of an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).
Khemchand Singh also extended an invitation to PM Modi to visit Manipur. The Prime Minister recognised the state government’s initiatives and noted that conditions in the state had improved.
The Chief Minister arrived in New Delhi on October 8 and held separate discussions with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, and Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on issues affecting the state.
Shah assured Khemchand Singh that the Centre would extend full cooperation to restore peace, accelerate development and address the aspirations of Manipur’s residents. He also commended the state government’s continued efforts to bring stability.
Passenger bus services linking Manipur with Assam and Nagaland resumed on August 21 after remaining suspended for more than three years, offering much-needed relief to travellers.
