Australian batter Matt Renshaw produced a remarkable 190 against South Africa in the opening Test at Kingsmead, Durban, on Saturday.
The left-hander faced 397 deliveries and struck 21 fours and one six, becoming the fourth batter in the list of all-time highest individual scores by an Australian batter.
Renshaw registered his second Test century after waiting nearly nine-and-a-half years. His previous hundred came in January 2017, when he scored 184 against Pakistan in Sydney.
His 190 ranks fourth among the highest individual Test scores by Australians against South Africa.
Greg Blewett leads with 214 in Johannesburg in 1997, followed by Adam Gilchrist’s unbeaten 204 in 2002 and Herbie Collins’ 203 in 1921.
Renshaw also faced the third-most deliveries by an Australian in a Test innings against South Africa. Blewett tops the list with 421 balls, while Michael Clarke faced 398 in 2012.
His innings surpassed Phillip Hughes’ 160 in 2009 to become the highest Test score by an Australian in Durban. It also eclipsed Kusal Perera’s unbeaten 153 from 2019 as the venue’s highest Test score by a batter at No. 5 or lower.
Renshaw helped Australia reach 390 after the team slumped to 124/6. This became the sixth-highest Test innings total after a team lost six wickets for fewer than 125 runs.
Pakistan hold the record with 561 against New Zealand in 1955 after reaching 111/6. Australia’s Pat Cummins contributed 43, Marnus Labuschagne scored 37, and Nathan Lyon added 27.
For South Africa, Wiaan Mulder took four wickets, Marco Jansen claimed three, Anrich Nortje picked up two, and Simon Harmer took one.
