Blood sugar can rise even when a person has not eaten. Emotional stress, anxiety, fear, pain and intense exercise can trigger this change. These situations activate the body’s fight-or-flight response and may cause temporary glucose spikes.
Adrenaline, or epinephrine, plays a central role. The adrenal glands release this hormone during stressful or physically demanding situations. It prepares the body for rapid action by ensuring that vital organs and muscles receive enough energy.
Dr Palleti Siva Karthik Reddy, Consultant Physician at Elite Care Clinic, said adrenaline signals the liver to break down stored glycogen into glucose. It can stimulate new glucose production through gluconeogenesis.
The hormone can temporarily reduce insulin secretion. It can make muscle and fat cells less responsive to insulin.
This leaves more glucose in the bloodstream for immediate use by the brain and muscles.
Food-related glucose rises occur when the body digests and absorbs carbohydrates. Stress-related spikes work differently. The body releases glucose already stored in the liver.
In healthy people, these increases usually remain short-lived. Insulin levels rise after the stressful event ends, helping blood glucose return to normal.
People with diabetes or prediabetes may experience stronger or longer-lasting spikes.
Triggers can include poor sleep, infections, public speaking, examinations, work pressure, arguments, heavy traffic and excessive caffeine.
Regular exercise, adequate sleep, mindfulness, controlled breathing and a consistent routine can help manage stress. People with diabetes should continue prescribed medication and monitor glucose regularly.
